Adem Colpan, 30, is second generation owner of the Pudding Shop on Divanyolu street where Billy Hayes made the drug deal that landed him in jail and gave birth to the 1978 movie “Midnight xpress.” This is all most Americans know of Turkey, and it’s all wrong, say Turks and those who have visited Istanbul.
“Some old hippies complain aboutthe changes (in Istanbul) when they visit now,” says Colpan. “But I say you are not the same either, now you don’t have dirty clothes and long hair, you have jobs. Times change.”

    Time Out - İstanbul
Once described as early British Rail: dark wood-lined walls, tiled floors and wipe-clean tables. Here you are not only eating cheaply but also imbibing recent history. In the 1960s and 1970s, the restaurant was a recognised stop-over on the hippie trail east. Messages were left here, cars bought and sold, and information exchanged. Hippies who couldn’t remember anything else could remember “that place that sells puddings — the pudding shop”.
Twenty-five years ago. when young European and American tourists began coming to Istanbul en route to Afghanistan, India and Nepal, they congregated in the Sultanahmet area. The Lale Pastanesi, located across Divan Yolu from the Hippodrome, became one of their favorite meeting places.
